We appreciate your interest in a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship at the University of Michigan!
After creating your OpenWater account, please make sure to choose the correct application form in the drop down menu depending on your citizenship. If you are a U.S. citizen, apply as a U.S. applicant, even if you work in another country or for a non–U.S. journalism entity. If you are not a U.S. citizen, apply as an international applicant, even if you work in the United States or for an American journalism entity. (A green card is not the same as citizenship.) International applications uploaded in the U.S. portal will not be considered. If you are a dual citizen of the U.S. and another country, please email apply2kwf@umich.edu for guidance on whether to complete a U.S. application or an international application.
As a journalism organization, Wallace House expects and requires that applicants write their own submissions, without any support from Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is also true for applicants for whom English is a second language.
International applications are due on December 1, 2025 by 11:59pm ET. The deadline for the submission of international applications is due to the length of the visa process. Non-U.S. citizens who submit an application in the U.S. portal will not be considered.
U.S. applications, including two new fellowships-- the Arts Journalism Fellowship and the Great Lakes Local News Fellowship-- are due on February 1, 2026 by 11:59pm ET.
To start a new application or to continue with an existing one, please click here. For more information on completing the application, please visit the Wallace House Center for Journalists website.
We look forward to reviewing your application!
